Abby Goodrich was the leading scorer in 3 of the 4 games that 6th Grade Blue played at the Hoop it Up Tournament in West Chester, leading the Jaguars to 3 victories. The girls lost a tough game to the Delaware Lady Sharks, in overtime, by a score of 39-36. Goodrich had 10. Undeterred by their opening loss the team rallied for 3 consecutive victories. Led by Lauren Beppel's 9 points the team won a close 27-22 contest over a big and tough PA Premier team and followed that up with two more wins on Sunday. The Jags beat the United Ballers 46-12 again with Goodrich leading the way with 10 points and they finished strong with a 43-24 win over Competitive Edge by a score of 43-24. Grace Herbein and Goodrich each had 6 and all Jaguars players scored in this game. Coach Murtin stressed afterwards that the teams success stems from the lockdown man to man defense that the girls have committed to playing.
In other action:
Both 4th and 5th Grade Blue played in their Regional Qualifying Tournament and both had disappointing weekends. 4th Grade Blue lost to the Comets and Magic. Coach Higgins felt bad for the girls as it was one of those frustrating weekends where just no shots would fall, going 4 for 29 in one game. 5th Grade Blue suffered similar frustrations dropping contests to Lower Delco (by 1 point), the Magic and the eventual champion team from Altoona.
5th Grade Black continued their strong play with a 3-1 weekend, losing only to a 6th Grade team from Chester County by a score of 47-30. Victories came over Upper Makefield, twice, 38-27 and 46-36 and over a 6th Grade team from Great Valley by a score of 46-42. Isaac White kept up his torrid pace averaging 18.5 points and 15 rebounds per game for the weekend. Zevion Brown had 43 points and Connor Greenberg 20 over the 4 games.
6th Grade Black had a positive 2 - 2 weekend losing twice to a 7th grade team from Treddyfrin Township. The team also had an easy victory over a team from West Chester and a hard fought 44-41 "thriller" against Downingtown.
6th Grade White had a little triumph and tragedy over the weekend, winning two close games on Saturday but falling twice on Sunday. Coach Schmidt was very happy with the teams overall defense and was especially pleased with the invigorated play of Aigner Thaxton who led the team in rebounds and steals. Unfortunately, Ameerah Green suffered a season ending wrist injury on Saturday. Ameerah took it hard to basket, made a sweet left handed lay-up depsite the foul but came down hard.
7th Grade Black picked up two more victories over Mothers Day weekend and also some new and interesting nicknames. The "Big Cat" Catalano led a strong defensive effort the whole weekend leading the team to their 2-2 record. The first game was a 48-45 gritty win and "Big Kev" Bernabe led all scorers with 13 including the clutch free throws down the stretch. "Kendra Lamar" Kendra added 8 while "Big O" Evans chipped in with 7. Game 2 was a tough loss as the team team struggled from the field. "Big Dre" Light led the way with 13 points, "Big RB3" Bearden had 7 (his nickname changes from game to game!) and "Big Dane" Cirino added 6. Game 3 saw the team drop a heartbreaker 44-43. "Brandon" Schimpf led scoring with 10 points including a 3 pointer with 10 seconds to play that tied the game after a big comeback. "Central" Parke flew in from Orlando (a ringer?) to record 6 points. The team got back in the win column wit ha 61-46 victory in the tournament finale. "Big O" Evans filled the score sheet with 12 points looking over at the bench after every bucket. "Big Meech" Martin poured in 10 points and "Big Fig" Klauder had 5. If only the actual height of these players matched their nicknames!
8th Grade Black had another ho-hum 4-0 weekend and in the process avenged one of their only two losses of the season when they beat the Malvern Legends by a score of 63-60 Among the other games, which were all close, hard fought wins was an 81-77 victory over the Chester County Thunder. Luke Farnsworth had two clutch 3 pointers down the stretch to compliment the 6 straight free throws in the final minutes by Justin Jaworski.
